Renowned New York designer Peter Do, in collaboration with the biomaterials company TomTex, unveiled two looks from his clothing collection at New York Fashion Week for Spring-Summer 2023.
The latest eco-trend, which experts believe could transform our lives in the coming decade, is gaining momentum. Biotechnology, already making waves in industries like manufacturing, medicine, and pharmaceuticals, has now entered the fashion world. One of the pioneers in this field is American designer Peter Do, who crafted his garments from 100% biodegradable material—what he calls “new non-woven biotextile,” derived from processing food waste from mushrooms and shrimp.
The material produced by TomTex is soft and silky to the touch, resembling suede in appearance. It is made from chitosan—a biopolymer sourced from natural origins. The raw materials for production are supplied by companies in Vietnam that specialize in collecting and processing food waste from mushrooms and seafood, including shrimp and shells.
Since its founding in 2020, TomTex has continuously improved the mechanical properties of its material, achieving top-notch strength, enhancing its aesthetic qualities, and refining the market appeal of the biotextile. Notably, the biocomposite contains no plastic components!
