Microphone by the Blushing Apple

There’s nothing worse than biting into an apple only to find a worm inside! It may look rosy and fragrant on the outside, but inside, it’s just a mushy mess. There’s little joy in eating fruit that’s been compromised. Yet, the tree provides all its apples with the same amount of juice, giving the worm-infested ones just as many nutrients as the healthy ones…

But is there a way to tell if a worm has made its home in an apple while it’s still green?

Of course, you won’t find out just by feeling the apple with your fingers. However, if you use a microphone and an amplifier, even the biggest apple won’t be able to hide its secret! Simply bring the microphone close to the fruit hanging on the branch, and it will “hear” the rustling sound typically made by a caterpillar that has burrowed inside. The amplifier will turn this subtle sound, which is inaudible to the human ear, into a noise—if you want, a deafening roar!

Once the damaged apple is identified, it can be picked. This way, only healthy fruit remains on the trees. They will grow and fill with juice more quickly, receiving far more nutrients.

But even a perfectly healthy apple can fall victim to birds. Here, radio technology comes to the rescue. Speakers are hung around the garden, and periodically, a recorded “alarm call” of birds is played. The feathered pests quickly flee from the perceived danger, leaving the fruit intact.
