History has preserved a statement from an American clergyman. In 1875, he proclaimed that science could not advance any further; it had discovered everything there was to discover. When he was told that humans would one day fly through the air, the clergyman flew into a rage.
“Only angels can fly! To suggest that humans could do so is to insult God!”
It’s worth noting that there were many such statements from clergymen of his time. We might not remember them if it weren’t for the clergyman’s last name. His name was Wright, and he had two sons—Orville and Wilbur. Just 30 years after that conversation, they built an airplane and took to the skies.
Interestingly, this milestone occurred after a Russian aircraft with a steam engine, created by Mikhail Mozhaysky, had already flown. Thus, the sons of this American skeptic fulfilled the mission of angels.
