Peel, rinse, and cut the carrots into sticks or cubes. Pour boiling water over them, drain in a colander, and place them in a pot with heated butter and a small amount of water. Add sugar. Cover with a lid and simmer on low heat, shaking the pot occasionally and adding a spoon or two of water as needed.
