One of Nature’s Mistakes

Piglets

Piglets have every right to be upset with Her Majesty—nature. She seems to have forgotten to provide sows’ milk with enough vitamins and essential minerals like iron and copper, which are crucial for the growth of piglets. A deficiency in these nutrients often leads to health issues in young pigs. So, how can we remedy nature’s oversight?

In some countries, successful experiments have been conducted using artificial milk formulated by chemists to feed piglets. This milk contains everything necessary for the normal development of pig offspring.

Nature was a bit more thoughtful when it came to cow’s milk. It’s no coincidence that it’s often referred to as “a meal in a bottle.” Cow’s milk contains nearly everything needed to sustain life.

However, even here, nature overlooked a few details. Cow’s milk has a high concentration of calcium salts, which can make it difficult for infants to digest. But chemists in Kyiv have found a solution. Using special substances called ion-exchangers, they have learned to remove the excess salts from the milk. This “adjusted” milk is easily absorbed by a young organism.
