Much has been written about the largest slave uprising in ancient Rome two thousand years ago, famously led by Spartacus. In honor of this remarkable figure from history, mass sporting competitions in the USSR have been called Spartakiads since 1928.
But where was Spartacus born? Scholars have conducted specialized research and discovered a mention in one of the manuscripts by the ancient Greek writer Plutarch, stating that Spartacus belonged to the tribe of the Maedi, which lived along the middle course of the Struma River.
Thus, Spartacus’s homeland is located in the southwestern part of modern-day Bulgaria.
