SILO

One summer, the rains just wouldn’t let up, and like many livestock owners, I struggled to stockpile enough hay. As summer faded and autumn approached, the grass around us was lush and plentiful, but how could I preserve it for the winter? After some thought, I decided to try silage. But how? I didn’t have a pit or any suitable containers on hand. What if I used plastic bags instead? I bought some bags and got to work. I chopped the grass and sprinkled a bit of salt as I packed it into the bags, making sure to compress it well. Once the bags were filled to the brim, I tied them tightly, letting out any excess air first.

The silage turned out to have a distinct, quite pleasant aroma. When my cows and heifers discovered what was stored in those bags, they eagerly tore them open to enjoy the tasty, fresh silage. So, I learned two important lessons: first, I needed to choose sturdier bags, and second, I should store them behind a strong barrier.
