“I have three varieties of Vigna in my collection (Japanese, Chinese, and Korean) along with two types of regular beans. I won’t focus on the regular beans, but let me tell you about Vigna. The Japanese Vigna is a vigorous climbing plant that can reach heights of up to 16 feet. Of course, it needs support to grow. The pods can be about 3 feet long, and the yield is around 6.6 pounds per plant. The Chinese Vigna is similar in its climbing nature and height, but it produces shorter pods, reaching up to 20 inches, with a lower yield of about 4.4 pounds per plant. The Korean Vigna is a bush variety that continues to bear fruit until the first frost. Vigna is used just like regular beans.
In addition, I also cultivate ornamental beans. They bloom with bright red flowers all summer long and produce large seeds. This type of bean is great for trellises—let it beautify your space! The house I live in stands out, particularly because of the decorative beans. I also have an orange bush bean variety that can yield up to three harvests of green pods a year in the conditions of Dagestan.”
