Pumpkin is a Berry

What size can a berry be? When you hear the word “berry,” many might think of strawberries or cherries. But the largest strawberry is about the size of a chicken egg. Gooseberries, raspberries, and currants are much smaller than strawberries. So, what berry could possibly be the size of a person?

When you find out, you might be surprised:
— Is a pumpkin really a berry?

What else could it be? The fruit of a pumpkin has juicy flesh and numerous seeds. From a botanical perspective, it is indeed a true berry! In fact, it’s the largest berry we know of: bigger than both melons and watermelons.

A few years ago, in the Chinese province of Fujian, pumpkins weighing 52 kilograms (about 115 pounds) were grown. However, at an agricultural exhibition in Beijing in 1960, there was a pumpkin that weighed even more—81 kilograms (approximately 178 pounds). It towered over the pioneers who were marveling at this garden wonder from Hubei province.
