Sealing Rings

Sealing rings Sealing Rings

Sealing rings on canning lids often wear out, spoil after use, and what can you replace them with? For the past five years, I’ve successfully used rings from 200-300 gram jars. Here’s how to create a larger sealing ring: I cut one small ring (at a 90-degree angle), and from another, I cut a piece about 80 mm long (the length is chosen so that the ring fits snugly in the lid). I place the rings in the lid, securing the first joint with a clothespin. Then, I lay the smaller ring around the circumference, placing the end of the second ring against the end of the first and “seating” it in place. From three small rings, you can make two large ones, and the sealed jars are just as airtight!
