A design school will be built in Bogotá – vibrant and playful.

The design project for a school of design and creative space for students at Ean University in Bogotá was created by the British firm Heatherwick Studio. This architectural and design studio, with headquarters in London and Shanghai, is renowned for its extravagant designs.

The new seven-story building, located right in the heart of Bogotá, has already sparked both criticism and admiration. Some criticize the project’s authors for its flamboyance and lack of taste, while others praise it for its extraordinary nature. Regardless, the future creative hub for students is sure to leave no one indifferent.

The structure by Heatherwick Studio will be easily identifiable thanks to its unique facade featuring colorful columns and open green terraces. In designing this playful building, the architects drew inspiration from authentic woven baskets made by the indigenous community of the Wounaan.

According to the project’s authors, the new building, which will serve as the campus’s centerpiece, is intended to blend organically into Bogotá’s historic center. Importantly, it will be constructed based on biophilic design principles—emphasizing a close connection between humans and nature. As the Heatherwick Studio team noted, Colombia boasts the second-highest level of biodiversity in the world, and Bogotá is recognized as a leader in ecological development. So, it’s no surprise that the new school will be abundant with local plant species.

The architects are also developing innovative facade materials that will help ensure the building’s durability. These materials will reflect the intense sunlight characteristic of the high-altitude city.

“Creativity is very important for Bogotá,” noted Eliot Postma, one of the leaders at Heatherwick Studio. “We want students to feel proud of their campus even before they step inside the building. The public space in front of the building will become a welcoming oasis amid the bustling urban environment,” he added.

This project will mark Heatherwick Studio’s first venture in South America, as reported by Designboom. Construction is set to begin in 2025.
