Famous New York designer Peter Do, in collaboration with the biomaterials developer TomTex, created and presented two looks for his clothing collection at New York Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2023.

The latest eco-trend, which experts believe has the potential to change our lives in the coming decade, has recently been gaining momentum. Biotechnology, which is already being implemented in industries such as manufacturing, medicine, pharmacology, and others, has now reached the fashion world. One of the pioneers in this direction is an American designer. Peter Do that sewed its clothing from 100% biodegradable material – the so-called “new non-woven biotextile,” obtained from the processing of food waste from mushrooms and shrimp.

The material that the company TomTex has started producing is soft and silky to the touch, and it looks similar to suede. It is made from chitosan, a biopolymer derived from natural sources. The raw materials for production are supplied by companies from Vietnam that collect and process food waste from mushrooms and seafood, such as shrimp and shells.

Since the founding of TomTex in 2020, the developers have continuously improved the mechanical properties of the material and achieved the highest levels of its strength, enhanced its aesthetic qualities, and improved the commercial appearance of the biofabric. Note that the biocomposite contains no plastic components!
