Loving booze and sleeping until noon? Science links those habits to higher intelligence

A fondness for alcohol and sleeping until noon are signs of high intelligence.

Do people around you think you’re a drunk, a slacker, and a rude person because you tend to sleep until noon, enjoy a drink or two, and pepper your speech with colorful language? Don’t worry—those who have a messy desk, reach for the bottle, and rise late actually show higher intelligence than teetotalers and neat freaks. At least, several studies suggest that.

A study at the University of Minnesota found that people with above-average IQs are more likely to use profanity. Meanwhile, Japanese scientist Satoshi Kanazawa found that people with higher intelligence often turn to alcohol—either to escape their own deep thoughts or to help them socialize.

Additionally, psychologists at Berkeley found that people who are active at night and wake up late tend to have higher intelligence. Famous night owls include Elvis Presley, Nikola Tesla, Charles Dickens, and Winston Churchill. And Harvard researchers say a chaotic workspace can actually prime the brain for creativity, so it’s better to call it creative clutter rather than a mess.

Now you know how to justify your bad habits 🙂
