Among the rare artifacts unearthed by archaeologists are a gold ring-shaped brooch, jade, and a bronze pin, all dating back to the early Bronze Age (around 2500 B.C.).
Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, emphasized the significance of the find, calling it “one of the most important discoveries in the last 100 years.” The artifacts were uncovered as part of the ministry’s “Heritage for the Future” project, aimed at preserving and expanding Anatolia’s cultural heritage.
Remarkable Relics of Troy
The highlight of the recent excavations is an exceptionally well-preserved gold ornament known as a ring brooch. In ancient times, it served both as a functional item and a symbol of prestige. Typological studies have confirmed that there are only two other brooches like this in the world, according to Arkeonews. The fact that this ornament has survived for millennia makes it one of the rarest treasures of early human civilization.
Equally intriguing is the jade discovered by researchers. In the ancient world, this precious stone was associated with elite status, rituals, and luxurious adornments. The jade found may have been intended for a ring or pendant, and it also serves as a reminder of the advanced trade networks of the ancient city.
Troy, located in modern-day Çanakkale, Turkey, has been a center of history and legend for millennia. The city’s fame is immortalized in Homer’s .
Archaeological research in Troy began over 160 years ago, with Heinrich Schliemann’s excavations in the 19th century being the most notable. Since then, scholars have identified at least nine major layers of settlement (from Troy I to Troy IX), spanning periods from the early Bronze Age to the Byzantine era.
The recently unearthed treasures will soon be displayed at the Troy Museum, which has been operating since 2018. It houses thousands of artifacts from various periods of the legendary city’s history.
Minister Ersoy expressed gratitude to the researchers who worked on the excavations, noting, “The 4,500-year-old gold brooch and jade from Troy are significant additions to our cultural heritage. Thanks to the dedication of our archaeologists and experts, these treasures will tell the story to future generations.”
