According to science: how to properly cut and eat a sandwich.

According to popular belief, a rectangular sandwich should be cut diagonally to create two triangles. But is this method really the most optimal?

Researcher Luis Villazon shared his thoughts on the perfect sandwich with Science Focus.

According to his theory, a triangle allows for the first two bites to be taken from two corners at 45°. These bites have crust on only one side and provide quicker access to the center of the sandwich, where the most filling is concentrated.

Once you’ve tackled the corners, you’ll have one to three bites left along the diagonal, which lacks crust. Depending on the size of the sandwich, you might even have a smaller triangle remaining.

Ultimately, each triangle turns into one piece of crust at a 90° angle. However, if you try to do this with a sandwich cut straight, you’ll end up with two crunchy corners for each piece instead of just one.

Another argument in favor of triangles is that they are easier to eat. However, children and cartoon characters often ignore this logic and take their first bite from the middle of the sandwich, smearing mayonnaise or jam all over their faces. But if you start eating this complex sandwich from one of the corners, the bite will be “cleaner.”

Experts suggest that the best approach is to cut the sandwich into four triangles and then eat each one in a few neat bites.

This method is also considered optimal by children’s party organizers, who recommend trimming the crusts as well. Unfortunately, kids rarely start devouring a sandwich from a 45° corner.
