The volunteers also answered questions from a standard set of tests measuring concentration, processing speed, as well as planning and task execution abilities. It turned out that age-related declines in these abilities were more closely linked to the participants’ everyday speech rate rather than their struggles with finding the right words.

A crucial part of this research involved a task requiring quick and accurate word identification for specific images, as reported by Science Alert. The scientists found that the natural speech rate of older adults correlated with their speed in naming pictures.

Thus, the team believes that the underlying cause of significant cognitive and linguistic changes with age may be a general slowdown in information processing, rather than issues with word recall.
