What plays the most important role in choosing a partner? This question often intrigues individuals of both genders who are on the hunt for their better half. The saying goes that men are attracted by what they see, while women are drawn in by what they hear. Researchers have sought to explore whether there truly is a difference in how potential partners are perceived based on gender.
Aesthetics of Beauty or Financial Stability?
Many films and books—especially those with a romantic twist—tell the tale of women dreaming of marrying wealthy men. A new study suggests that this stereotype may indeed hold some truth.
While women are generally more romantic than men, they are also quite rational. This is why they tend to prefer financially stable partners over dreamers and storytellers.
A research team led by Meike Scheller claims that for women, a man’s social status and financial prospects are top priorities. They plan long-term relationships only with those who meet these criteria, according to the Daily Mail.
Researchers assert that women typically invest more in relationships than men do. Additionally, their reproductive years are relatively limited. This is why they tend to be more selective and approach partner choice with great care, as they “cannot afford to take risks,” notes Dr. Steven White.
Men, on the other hand, are more focused on physical appearance. They primarily assess a partner’s attractiveness. Social status and financial prospects are less significant to them than they are for women. In other words, studies show that men indeed love with their eyes, while women are not solely influenced by their ears.
Sexual Energy Influences Partner Choice
In their research, Scheller’s team also sought to understand whether sexual attraction affects partner selection. It is believed that each person has certain traits that attract them to a partner. For some, high intelligence is more appealing than physical appearance.
To determine how sexual energy levels influence the choice of a significant other, Scheller’s team conducted a study involving two groups of participants, each consisting of both men and women.
The first group included 310 participants with low libido. The second group consisted of 166 participants with heightened sexual energy. During the survey, researchers gathered information about the intensity of sexual and romantic attraction in these individuals, as well as their partner preferences.
The study’s results revealed that more sexually active men prefer physical attractiveness and intelligence in potential partners. However, women with high libido are more attracted to serious partners with financial prospects.
These preferences were less pronounced in the group with low sexual desire. According to the research, women for whom sex is not a significant factor place greater importance on intelligence and education in a potential partner. Physical attractiveness, social status, and financial prospects play a minor role for them. Men with low sexual desire attributed less importance to all partner characteristics, except for social status and financial prospects.
A Small “But” That Could Alter the Final Choice
The findings indicate that sexual attraction plays a key role in partner selection. Overall, this research demonstrates that women and men have different views on the most desirable qualities in a potential partner. Moreover, the choice is somewhat influenced by the strength of sexual and romantic attraction.
However, can we completely dismiss love as a feeling that knows no bounds and clouds our judgment, leading us to choose a partner who doesn’t match the ideal we have in mind? That is another question, one that everyone can answer in their own way, even without extensive research.
