For the bread-300 ml of kefir (a fermented milk drink similar to buttermilk) 1 egg 1 tbsp sugar 1 heaping tsp baking soda, activated with vinegar flour for a soft dough
Additionally-1 cup of poppy seeds 3-4 tbsp sugar 3 tbsp honey 1 cup of boiling water
Mix all the ingredients to form a soft dough (softer than for dumplings). Shape it by hand into a rectangle about 8 by 10 inches. Bake at 375°F (190°C) until golden brown.
Rinse the poppy seeds, soak them, and grind them while adding sugar. Cut the dough into small pieces (about 1 inch by 1 inch), pour boiling water over them, and cover with a lid to steam (the dough should not be too wet). Add honey and poppy seeds, and mix well. You can adjust the amount of honey (or sugar) to your taste.
