Dear Zimonka, I feel sad: how simple rituals overcome seasonal melancholy.

According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, about three percent of adults suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Meanwhile, many others feel downcast at the thought of a long winter ahead.

However, experts may have finally found a remedy for seasonal gloom. To overcome it, one must have a heartfelt chat with Winter.

Researchers from the University of Glasgow in Scotland suggest that a letter beginning with “Dear Winter” and expressing your feelings about the season can alleviate seasonal depression.

Additionally, scientists recommend using candles, mirrors, and shiny objects in your dimly lit home. These can serve as an inexpensive yet effective alternative to sunlight and sun-simulating lamps.

Another idea is to imagine yourself sitting in a medieval sunroom with large windows and stained glass, located on the upper floor of a castle.

For remote work during winter days and evenings, it’s a good idea to set up a workspace by a window. And between tasks, take breaks to go for walks and observe the colors of the sky, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Professor Hester Parr, the study’s author, noted, “Instead of focusing on how gray and dark the sky can be, you can look at its colors and notice how light breaks through the clouds.”

In her view, it’s important to enjoy natural light while it lasts. It’s also beneficial to attend autumn and winter festivals dedicated to sunlight and to participate in traditional Halloween gatherings with their pumpkin lanterns.

Scottish researchers have even created a free online course in cognitive behavioral therapy called “Living Life To The Full,” inviting anyone interested to join. One of the course’s key goals is to help those burdened by seasonal sadness.
