From Pasta to Chicken Breasts: Foods That Don’t Belong in a Slow Cooker

Products that don't belong in a slow cooker
That’s the verdict from British consumer group Which?. They test products and services and offer consumer advice on a range of topics.
Recently, Which? examined common slow-cooker mistakes and identified foods you should never cook in one.
Fatty meats and root vegetables cook well in a slow cooker, but some ingredients are simply too dry, too tough, or release too much liquid.
Pasta is one of those foods best prepared in traditional cookware. The issue is that pasta tends to overcook very quickly in a slow cooker, losing its flavor in the process.
Rice is also tricky. However, if you insist on cooking it in this trendy way, add extra liquid. Otherwise, the rice will end up undercooked, as reported by Daily Mail.
Delicate vegetables and herbs should also be avoided in a slow cooker. They will break down, turning into an unappetizing mush.
For the same reason, greens have no place in a slow cooker. It’s better to add them to the dish just before serving.
When it comes to meat for slow cooking, careful selection is crucial. This is especially true for people who prefer lean cuts, which dry out quickly in a slow cooker.
Here’s what Which? experts had to say about it: “Cheaper and fattier cuts of meat are better suited for this cooking method. If possible, avoid lean meats when using a slow cooker, or cook them as quickly as possible. The more marbled the meat, the better the outcome. But remember, all the fat will remain in the dish.”

Another useful tip: “If you have time, sear the meat in a pan before placing it in the slow cooker. This not only helps reduce fat content but also adds extra flavor and improves the dish’s appearance.”
Now, let’s talk about chicken. If you’re aiming for a juicy dish, choose thighs rather than breasts.

Time to Reinforce the Lesson

Don’t cook pasta in a slow cooker.
Add more liquid to rice.
Prepare delicate vegetables and herbs using other methods.
Remember: chicken breasts and any other lean meats will turn out dry in a slow cooker.

A Few More Helpful Observations

Previous tests have shown that it’s impossible to properly cook the following foods (dishes) in a slow cooker:

  • French fries – they will become soft and won’t be crispy.
  • Seafood – it will turn rubbery.
  • Milk porridge – it will burn and be difficult to clean from the pot.
  • Pancakes – they will spread out.
  • Baked goods with a golden crust – condensation on the lid will prevent that crust from forming.
