Green Terrace Quarter: A futuristic hub for shopping and relaxation will be built in Haikou.

The dynamic yet cozy metropolis of Haikou (Hainan, China) is rapidly evolving into a hub for international tourism.

Haikou attracts travelers and expats with its gentle subtropical climate and comfortable urban environment, making it a place where many wish to settle for life.

Recently, architects from Aedas unveiled their vision for the next transformation of the city’s landscape, particularly in the central area of the metropolis. This project won a competition for the best conceptual design for the D10 site on Gosing Avenue in Haikou. The project’s official name is HNA Center Plot D10 Retail Street.

The new massive retail district will feature a well-developed infrastructure for walking and relaxation, sprawling across a land area of 267,000 square meters.

A standout feature of this multi-level shopping environment will be its green terraces—eco-friendly, multifunctional spaces reminiscent of fantastical mushrooms.

A Gateway to Haikou’s Future

The architects boldly claim that this project will usher in a new era of dynamic retail in this hot tourist destination. Kevin Wang, Aedas’s design director, envisions the conceptual D10 site as a gateway to Haikou’s future.

According to the architects’ promises, the retail hub will seamlessly integrate into the city’s profile, which is focused on implementing various ecological initiatives and extensive greening efforts.

The revamped area of Haikou will go “beyond traditional retail concepts, creating a deep connection with the urban environment.” The modernized retail and office facades will give the city a fresh vibe.

A Comfortable Space for Shopping and Relaxation

One of the project’s most notable features is the creation of two open courtyards along the shopping street. These courtyards will host anchor stores, while two office towers will serve as the architectural ensemble’s focal points, strategically positioned at the corners of the development. From the rooftops of these skyscrapers, visitors will enjoy picturesque views of the new district and all of Haikou.

The first and underground levels of the retail structures will form a unified circulation network, smoothly connecting the areas and terraces on the second and third floors.

This interconnected layout will ensure easy access to all the shops within the complex. The retail space on the third floor will become a 24/7 public area for socializing, with ample room for dining, community gatherings, and commercial events. In a smaller section, linked corridors will create a vibrant, multi-layered environment, as noted by Designboom.

The open courtyards of the district and the interconnected transport networks will facilitate access to all facilities within the complex.

What About the Terraces?

Large canopied terraces will enhance the visual appeal of the area while providing optimal shade. This will allow visitors to enjoy the outdoor space in any weather. Additionally, some terraces will feature relaxation areas where guests can feel as if they are on flying carpets.

Some of the greenery-adorned canopies will create a “magical pathway leading to a heavenly corridor,” as the architects described on their website. Moreover, the terraces are sure to become a favorite spot for selfie enthusiasts.

The new district is set to open in 2025.
