Archaeologists have uncovered a massive 3,000-year-old settlement during excavations at the Escaut Valley business park in the municipality of Onnen. They believe this settlement may have served as an important hub for community activities, where large gatherings with feasts took place.
On the archaeological site, which spans approximately 30,000 square meters, researchers found the remains of over twenty buildings. Some of these structures measured up to 25 meters in length.
The architectural layout indicates that life here was well-organized. The settlement played a significant role in a vast network of prehistoric communities in the region. Numerous signs of daily activities suggest an active social and economic life. Based on the artifacts discovered, the settlement had developed crafts such as metalworking, spinning, and weaving.
Researchers also found a wooden box containing metal parts at the excavation site, the purpose of which remains unknown, according to Arkeonews.
Within the living quarters, the team encountered large circular pits and rectangular ovens. The pits were filled with materials that had been subjected to high temperatures. They were likely used for cooking or ceramic production. The largest oven had a very thick refractory base.
This discovery has provided researchers with new insights into prehistoric life in northern France. Scientists believe that at the height of its prosperity, the settlement held a unique status as a center for public interactions among neighboring communities.
Archaeologists hope that further excavations will shed even more light on the ancient social, economic, and technological life of the region.
