How a Flock of Swans Broke the Ice to Find Spring

Swan

In Siberia, they say spring arrives on the wings of swans. Sometimes the birds drop it somewhere else and fail to deliver it, which might be why Siberian springs are so capricious. Lakes suddenly freeze over, and the birds are forced to turn south in search of spring…

One day, a flock of swans flew to a frozen lake in spring. The birds landed on the ice and began to walk across its smooth surface, calling to one another as if asking, “What should we do now? How do we proceed?”

At that moment, an old swan launched itself and struck the ice with its chest. It struck again, and the ice cracked. Then the other birds came to help the old swan, and soon the entire flock was breaking the ice.

After they opened a large hole, the ice-breaking swans began to forage peacefully in the water among the ice chunks, searching for food.
