Researchers from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University (USA) have uncovered how often people from various corners of the globe engage in sexual activity. The scientists examined data from 3,310 individuals aged 18 to 75 who registered on a popular dating app.
Thus, the study led by Dr. Justin Lehmiller has finally shed light on the sexual lives of thousands of people worldwide.
What Did the Researchers Discover?
The results confirmed that members of Generation Z have sex less frequently, have fewer partners, and engage in fewer relationships compared to previous generations. Respondents from the youngest generation reported having sex an average of three times a month, according to the Daily Mail.
Millennials and Generation X reported slightly higher numbers, with participants from both age groups having sex about five times a month.
Meanwhile, baby boomers, like the youth of Generation Z, also engage in physical intimacy approximately three times a month.
“Generation Z and baby boomers show nearly identical frequencies of sexual encounters, meaning the youngest and oldest individuals have the least sexual activity,” the team noted.
“Additionally, nearly half of Generation Z reported being single, compared to one-fifth of single individuals from the millennial, Generation X, and baby boomer cohorts,” the researchers added.
On the Tendency to Experiment
Despite Generation Z having the lowest sexual activity, it seems their experiences are marked by the greatest variety and a willingness to experiment.
Fifty-five percent of this generation reported discovering something new since they started using a dating app. This was acknowledged by 49 percent of Generation Y, 39 percent of Generation X, and 33 percent of baby boomers.
According to the researchers, there are at least two explanations for this. The first is that older individuals have had enough time throughout their lives to understand what they enjoy in sex. For them, there are likely no unexplored areas in the realm of intimacy.
The second explanation is that today’s young people seem to show a greater interest in experimentation and are more open to “exploring their kinks.” Researchers hope that the survey results will shed new light on the evolution of sex, gender, sexuality, and relationships.
As the scientists pointed out, despite the fact that open discussions about sex have long been taboo in society, “they have always existed within a continuum.” This continuum will continue to evolve and expand as Generation Z and future generations pursue their sexual self-discovery, the researchers added.
The team believes that the sooner people embrace this ordinary aspect of life, the better prepared they will be “to seek pleasure and happiness.”
