How old is your cat in human years? Calculator.

A tortoiseshell cat named Millie, who lives with her owner Leslie Greenhalf in the British town of Stockport, recently celebrated her 30th birthday. This milestone made headlines, as such an age is quite rare for cats. According to popular legend, one human year is equivalent to seven cat years. If that were true, Millie would be 210 years old in human terms. However, the way we calculate a cat’s age is different. So, how do you determine a cat’s age?

According to zoologists and veterinarians, the first year of a cat’s life is equivalent to 15 human years. The second year adds another 9 human years. Thus, by the time a cat reaches two years old, it is comparable to a 24-year-old human. Starting from the third year, each additional cat year equals four human years. Therefore, a three-year-old cat would be equivalent to a 28-year-old person. By the time a cat reaches six years, it is comparable to a 40-year-old human, as reported by the Daily Mail. Experts believe that cats age very quickly in their first two years, after which the process slows down. But how can you more or less accurately determine the age of these animals if they come into your home as adults?

Teeth
According to specialists, while teeth cannot indicate the exact birth date of a cat, they are still a good indicator of its age. Kittens usually start to get their first teeth between two to four weeks of age, with permanent teeth appearing around four months. If you notice a few yellow spots on a cat’s teeth, it is likely around one to two years old. However, if there are spots on all the teeth, the cat is probably at least three to five years old. Meanwhile, if some teeth are missing, it is likely that the cat is a “distinguished elder” aged 10 to 15 years. Keep in mind that some cats may have worse teeth than others, regardless of age, due to breed, upbringing, diet, or health conditions.

Eyes
In young animals, the iris (the colored part of the eye) is usually smooth, unlike that of older animals. After the age of 12, a cat’s eyes typically begin to cloud. You may also notice regular tearing and discharge from the eyes.

Muscles and Bones
Young cats are usually very active, which means their muscles are well-defined. When an animal starts to sleep more and loses muscle mass, it indicates that it is aging. Generally, older cats tend to be more bony, and they may develop excess skin.

Coat
A soft, fine coat is typically characteristic of young cats. In older animals, the fur often becomes thicker and coarser, sometimes with patches of gray hair.

Why is it important to know your cat’s age?
Experts say that understanding your cat’s age is crucial for being prepared for potential health issues related to aging. Recognizing that a cat has entered its mature, senior years will encourage owners to provide better care for their beloved pets.
