Architects from Heatherwick Studio have unveiled their design for the future Hanwha Galleria shopping center, set to rise in Seoul, a city known for its architectural innovations. The concept features two symmetrical buildings shaped like hourglasses, complete with romantically lit atriums and rooftops.
The British architects won a competition aimed at reimagining six locations in the South Korean capital. The designers excelled at the challenge—pushing the boundaries of traditional luxury department stores while reinforcing South Korea’s image as a global cultural hub.
The Hanwha Galleria buildings will be constructed at a central intersection overlooking the Han River. Two symmetrically placed structures (similar yet distinct) will be connected by an underground passage.
The silhouettes of the buildings will remind shoppers of hourglasses, featuring wavy glass facades that will create a soft shimmer throughout the day. Public spaces are planned to be filled with beautiful local plants.
Guests entering this fantastical world from the street will find themselves in spacious, light-filled atriums. After a day of shopping and art events, visitors can relax in an open garden with cafes and restaurants, enjoying picturesque views of the city.
Heatherwick Studio’s design aims to connect the modern department store with the local community. Therefore, a key focus for the designers was transforming the facades and surrounding areas into public spaces, as reported by Designboom. These areas will be accessible to everyone, whether they are shopping at the mall or simply enjoying a stroll.
This approach, contrasting with traditional inward-facing shopping centers, fosters a more inclusive and integrated urban environment.
“Traditionally, department stores seem to be ‘turned inward,’ appearing closed off from the surrounding streets. But these two buildings at the intersection in Apgujeong, the east and west, will encourage people to come together,” said Neil Hubbard, one of the leaders of the British team. According to him, Seoul residents will gain new garden-like spaces for gathering, shopping, and enjoying their city.
