The works of outstanding sculptors can now be recreated using a robot with software. It carves exquisite, detailed sculptures from Carrara marble, just like a master of the Renaissance.

This automated system was born. Michelangelo at the Italian company Robotor. A self-programming robot is paving its way into a new era of sculpture.

As the co-founders of the startup Robotor, Filippo Tinkolini and Giacomo Massari, explained, this invention significantly simplifies the sculptor’s work with stone. As is known, this work is physically complex, risky, and dangerous.

The startup founders noted that their cutting-edge solution originates in the heart of the Carrara region: “the very place where the valuable marble that Michelangelo used to carve his statues was produced.”

A robot sculptor nearly four meters tall. It is made of zinc alloy and can withstand heavy loads. In particular, it can cut the hardest materials with diamond-coated tools even in the most unfavorable conditions. The table on which the structure is installed can support a block weighing up to 50 tons.

According to the developers, the robot quickly performs work that in the Renaissance would have been assigned to an entire army of sculptors.

Universal artist

First, the robot analyzes the material it will be working with. After studying its properties and shape, the automated sculptor determines the points from which it will carve its work. Then it begins to create with colossal precision – according to the 3D model. Clients can participate in the process from the initial planning stage to the stage of refinement and adjustment.

Thanks to the software, the sculpture can be improved as much as desired. It also helps the artist navigate the selection of various tools that will be needed at different stages of the creative process, the publication reported. Designboom In addition, the software checks the quality of processing, the condition of the machine and its components in real-time, and also notifies of any anomalies if detected.

This technology, as envisioned by Robotor, is designed from the outset to reduce material waste. The robot can repurpose leftover stone. For example, it can transform them into other sculptures.

Filippo Tinkolini and Giacomo Massari say that their work is taught 99 percent. One percent is attributed to the person. And that is very significant.
