Sealing RingsSealing rings on canning lids often wear out after use — so what can you replace them with? For the past five years I’ve been using rings from 200-300 gram jars with great success. Here’s how to make a larger sealing ring: cut one small ring at a 90-degree angle, and cut a piece about 80 mm long from another ring — make the length so the ring fits snugly in the lid. Place the pieces in the lid, securing the first joint with a clothespin. Then lay the smaller ring around the inside circumference, press the end of the second piece against the end of the first, and seat it in place. From three small rings you can make two large sealing rings, and the jars seal just as airtight!
