Not a thriller, but a breakthrough: China has created the world’s first “child” with AI.

The world’s first “child” with artificial intelligence Tong Tong – which means “little girl” – has a somewhat eerie appearance. She seems to have stepped into our reality from a sci-fi thriller about a child android. However, unlike cinematic characters of this type, Tong Tong does not have a physical form. She can only be interacted with virtually.

The authors of the project from the Beijing Institute of General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI) have for the first time demonstrated the capabilities of Tong Tong at the Frontiers of General Artificial Intelligence Technology exhibition. According to the scientists, this represents a significant breakthrough in the field of AI.

What is the girl with AI like?

Tong Tong has the appearance and intelligence of a three-year-old child. Interestingly, she can even experience certain emotions, including joy, anger, and sadness.

Scientists say that the AI girl is capable of autonomously learning and exploring her environment. She interacts with people virtually, which allows her to continuously acquire knowledge and skills.

Guests at the exhibition presentation, for example, interacted with Tong Tong and assigned her tasks. For instance, the girl with AI was programmed to tidy up the space. She wiped up spilled milk with a towel she found on her own, the publication reported. Daily Mail She also fixed a crooked picture frame. If the frame was hanging too high, Tong Tong would stand on a stool and complete the task without anyone’s help.

But the most unique feature of Tong Tong is its ability to set tasks for itself. AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Google Bard only perform the tasks assigned to them by humans and do nothing unless asked to do so.

According to researchers from BIGAI, Tong Tong defines new tasks for itself based on values and common sense akin to human reasoning. The scientists assure that their “child” is significantly more independent than previous AI developments.

“To advance towards general artificial intelligence, we need to create entities that can understand the real world and possess a wide range of skills,” noted Zhu Songchun, director of BIGAI.
