In the United Kingdom, the popularity of vegan dog food is on the rise. A new study reported by the Daily Mail reveals that a plant-based diet can provide pets with nutrients comparable to traditional meat-based meals.
“Our research demonstrates that a properly balanced can be a healthy and viable alternative to meat-based foods,” explained Rebecca Brochick from the University of Nottingham.
What do vegan dogs eat?
Instead of chicken or beef, bowls for these pets are filled with sweet potatoes, carrot flakes, and pea protein.
The research team analyzed 31 types of dog food—both meat-based and plant-based. They found that the nutritional composition is nearly identical. The only difference is a lower content of iodine and B vitamins in vegan products. These gaps can easily be filled with dietary supplements.
Veterinary Concerns
Despite the optimistic findings, experts urge dog owners to proceed with caution.
“While dogs can theoretically thrive on a vegan diet, it is very challenging to ensure the correct balance of all nutrients,” emphasized Dr. Elizabeth Mallino from the British Veterinary Association. She advises consulting a veterinarian before making any changes to a pet’s diet.
Is the future plant-based?
is gaining momentum worldwide: for instance, in the UK, the number of people who have eliminated animal products has quadrupled in the last five years. More and more pet owners are considering whether to extend this choice to their dogs as well.
Researchers conclude that a plant-based diet could not only be beneficial for pets’ health but also more environmentally friendly. However, definitive conclusions can only be drawn after long-term observations.
