2 cups lard or 2 packages margarine
2 cups sour cream (a thicker, tangier Eastern European variety)
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon ammonia
Flour, as needed
Mix the lard, sour cream, and sugar until smooth.
Add the ammonia and enough flour to form a dough, then knead the dough.
Add more flour and knead until the dough resembles dumpling dough.
Roll the dough out thinly, sprinkle it with cinnamon, and roll it up tightly.
Cut the roll into small pieces, dip one side of each piece in sugar, and place the pieces on a baking sheet or on parchment paper.
Bake the pieces until they are golden brown.
If using margarine, cream the margarine with some flour first. Add the sour cream, sugar, and ammonia, and knead the dough until it resembles dumpling dough.
This recipe makes a generous portion.
