Plant-based fast food is not healthier than meat dishes.

The team from the Poznań University of Medical Sciences conducted a large-scale study involving 50 fast-food chains operating in five countries. In total, the researchers analyzed the health benefits and drawbacks of 1,868 dishes.

As the scientists discovered, plant-based sandwiches and pizzas, and even salads, are not necessarily healthier than their meat counterparts.

What the Researchers Found

Many people view the New Year as an opportunity to start a healthier lifestyle, particularly by improving their eating habits. Some may even wish to try veganism or vegetarianism.

However, the results of this new study will prompt health-conscious individuals to be more discerning about their food choices. First and foremost, they will need to reassess plant-based options at fast-food chains. According to the researchers, these dishes are just as calorie-dense as their meat-based equivalents.

During the study, the team collected data on the calorie content, allergen presence, and the amounts of nutrients, fiber, and salt in each serving of plant-based dishes.

The analysis revealed that these foods contain less protein and sodium than meat dishes, but more carbohydrates and sugar.

“Plant-based fast food contains more carbohydrates and sugar than their meat counterparts,” noted lead author Mykola Kaminsky. And, as surprising as it may seem, one cannot expect low calorie counts from plant-based options at fast-food restaurants.

This is particularly bad news for those trying to shed extra pounds. It turns out that plant-based fast food does not correlate with lower calorie counts, as reported by the Daily Mail.

According to Mr. Kaminsky, the study’s findings emphasize the importance of making informed food choices, especially when it comes to fast food. This is especially critical for individuals suffering from metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes.

Thus, the team has debunked the illusion that plant-based alternatives to popular meat dishes at fast-food establishments are automatically a healthier choice.

The results of the study were published in the journal Nutrition.
