How big can a berry be? When you hear the word “berry,” many people think of strawberries or cherries. But the largest strawberry is only about the size of a chicken egg. Gooseberries, raspberries, and currants are much smaller than strawberries. So what berry could possibly grow as big as a person?
When you find out, you might be surprised:
— Is a pumpkin really a berry?
What else could it be? A pumpkin’s fruit has juicy flesh and lots of seeds. Botanically, it is a true berry. In fact, it’s the largest berry we know — bigger than melons and watermelons.
A few years ago in China’s Fujian province, pumpkins weighing 52 kilograms (about 115 pounds) were grown. But at an agricultural exhibition in Beijing in 1960, a pumpkin weighed even more — 81 kilograms (about 178 pounds). It towered over pioneers who marveled at this garden wonder from Hubei province.
