Stone-Age ‘Canned Fish’ Found in Salt – Hardened When Exposed

rnrnSome discoveries are so strange they almost don’t seem real. Half a century ago, while digging a tunnel in the U.S. states Arizona and Nevada, workers encountered a layer of rock salt about 328 feet down. In one spot, they found strange fish trapped in the translucent salt blocks they were extracting. They broke the blocks open, and the fish inside were soft and apparently perfectly edible. But the catch appeared when workers brought the specimens to the surface. The ‘fish preserves,’ which were at least 10,000 years old, hardened like stone as soon as they reached the air.
