Bedtime Conversations: A Special Bond with My Son

I have two children: my son is 6 years old, and my daughter is 2. Every day brings its own challenges. But the most important moments of connection with my son happen at bedtime. I lie down next to him, and he says in a very grown-up way, “Let’s talk!” I start by telling him, “Sweetheart, I’m so tired today; I had a lot to do… I’m sorry I yelled at you; I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. When you and Ksyusha were arguing, I could see she was wrong, but I didn’t have time to explain that to you and sort things out then. I love you so much, and I’m sorry if I upset you in any way.” And you should see his face! He responds so seriously, “Mommy, I FORGIVE you!” And he looks so happy!

After that, we talk about everything under the sun. He loves to hear stories about how I met his dad, our wedding, how he was born and was so little, about God, and about angels. We play games like: I say a good deed, and he counters with a bad one; we come up with words that start with the last letter of the previous word; we explore our family tree, figuring out who is related to whom, and so on. These moments really bring me closer to my son, and he eagerly looks forward to our conversations.
