Tempting and beneficial: red wine enhances intimacy.

Researchers have proven that red wine not only sets the mood for romance but can also revitalize your sex life. According to a review of dozens of studies, consuming 1-2 glasses of this beverage daily reduces the risk of erectile dysfunction in men and enhances libido in women.

It’s All About the Flavonoids

As researchers assert, the plant compounds found in red wine can improve blood circulation, boost testosterone levels, and stimulate the sexual organs. The evidence they have gathered so far shows that moderate consumption of this alcoholic drink may be potentially beneficial for patients dealing with erectile dysfunction.

The key to the sexual benefits of red wine lies in its polyphenols. These compounds are present in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and tea.

Most polyphenols are flavonoids, which can be found in red wine, apples, onions, dark chocolate, and red cabbage. Flavonoids act as antioxidants, preventing oxidation in the body.

When oxidation occurs, unstable chemical substances known as free radicals are produced, which can damage cells. This is why antioxidants play a crucial role in preventing various diseases, including cardiovascular issues and certain types of cancer.

According to scientists, the antioxidants present in red wine are beneficial for the reproductive system. In cases of erectile dysfunction, the antioxidant properties of the drink’s polyphenols may improve vascular health.

This leads to increased blood flow to the penis, which is essential for maintaining an erection. Researchers also suggest that red wine may elevate testosterone levels, the primary driver of sexual desire, as well as male fertility.

Red Wine and Sexual Health

As reported by the Daily Mail, a team of scientists analyzed dozens of studies conducted from 1993 to 2022 among men and women of various ages and demographics. Many of these observations examined the effects of oxidation on vascular health, heart health, hormonal balance, and testosterone levels.

Some studies compared the effects of different alcoholic beverages, including beer. It turned out that red wine was the most effective for sexual health.

Regarding women, the research team highlighted a study involving nearly 800 women in Italy. The results indicated that those who consumed red wine in moderation had a higher level of sexual desire.

Women who drank less than one glass of wine per day or consumed any other alcoholic beverage did not show an increase in libido. It was also found that moderate consumption of red wine contributed to increased vaginal lubrication, a marker of better sexual function.

In a 2016 study, British scientists evaluated 50,000 healthy middle-aged men over 40 years. They discovered that those who regularly enjoyed a glass of red wine, along with some citrus fruits and berries, had a 9-11% lower chance of developing erectile dysfunction.

Another study focusing on women showed that those who regularly consumed wine in moderate amounts had higher libido than those who did not drink this alcoholic beverage. Other observations indicated that red wine boosts testosterone levels in both men and women, increasing sexual desire.

It’s important to note that according to the WHO, no amount of alcohol is considered safe. Nutritionists recommend that men limit their intake to two or fewer alcoholic drinks per day, while women should have one or fewer. Researchers also caution that further studies are needed to determine the more specific effects of polyphenols on sexual function.
