The Magic of Omelets: Experts Identify the Dish That Cures Holiday Hangovers

Not everyone knows that omelets have such miraculous properties. However, according to renowned British dietitian Cara Shaw, in addition to eggs, they must include several other essential ingredients.

The secret to the healing effects of an omelet primarily lies in the combination of protein and antioxidants in one dish.

A Simple Omelet – The Perfect Hangover Remedy

After a festive party, people often wake up with a dry mouth, a pounding headache, and an upset stomach. A terrible hangover can even keep someone in bed all day, occasionally sipping on pickle juice.

Perhaps Cara Shaw’s advice will be helpful to many. She explained that breakfast after a night of drinking should serve two purposes: to restore blood sugar levels and to support the liver, which is working hard to process and break down alcohol.

According to Ms. Shaw, to maintain blood sugar levels, one should eat breakfast within 90 minutes of waking up. It’s best to focus on high-protein dishes.

The expert also noted that alcohol severely overloads the liver, which requires serious detoxification. For this, a sufficient amount of protein, B vitamins, and antioxidants are necessary.

An optimal recovery breakfast could be a simple and inexpensive omelet. To help alleviate the hangover, it should include the following ingredients:

  • three eggs (which provide protein)
  • half a cup of sautéed mushrooms (which aid digestion)
  • half an avocado (which lowers blood pressure)
  • a piece of feta cheese (which boosts energy)
  • one tomato (which contains antioxidants)
  • olive oil (which has anti-inflammatory properties)

Each of these ingredients is extremely important, as they each offer unique benefits.

Eggs are known not only as a source of protein but also for choline—a nutrient that aids in liver detoxification, strengthens muscles, and improves mood. Mushrooms contain B vitamins that help with digestion, increase energy levels, and support liver function.

Avocado, which is rich in healthy fats, is also high in potassium, which helps lower blood pressure. Additionally, avocados are packed with vitamin E, which, due to its antioxidant activity, is involved in numerous bodily functions, including boosting immunity and eliminating toxins.

Feta cheese contains protein and vitamin B12, which can elevate energy levels after a night of drinking. Cooked tomatoes also possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Olive oil, known for its anti-inflammatory effects, contains polyphenols. These characteristics help alleviate the stress inflicted on the body by alcohol consumption.

It’s essential to drink plenty of water with this breakfast. Excessive drinking can lead to dehydration, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Ms. Shaw also recommended that hangover sufferers swap their morning coffee for a cup of matcha tea. This drink contains less caffeine and is rich in antioxidants that provide an energy boost. However, it’s best to drink tea after eating to avoid a sudden spike in cortisol levels—the stress hormone.

While proper nutrition and hydration can help mitigate the unpleasant effects of a hangover, experts warn that the body won’t return to normal in just one day. It may take at least two days to feel healthy again.

According to British consultant physician Hussein Ahmad, even if you drink just one glass of beer or a small glass of dry wine, the body will process that alcohol over two to three hours. If you consume several such servings, it may take about 12 hours to eliminate the alcohol from your system, he added.
