The ‘Unattractive Figure’ Is Just Fear: Coco Chanel on What Really Makes a Woman

“A figure that is scared from head to toe,” declared Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, one of the twentieth century’s greatest fashion designers.

Madame Chanel needs no introduction; her global fame was built on tailored suits, perfumes, cosmetics, accessories, and jewelry from the House of Chanel.

Nature doesn’t often bestow classic beauty. Few of us have Marilyn Monroe’s looks, but like her, we often fuss over our nightgowns. Sometimes, instead of a nightgown, we spray on Chanel No. 5. (Let’s hope the men don’t overhear!) Some of our body flaws could certainly use a little concealment!

Madame Chanel argued that classic beauty is a myth; what’s far more appealing is a woman’s grace, manners, and pleasant conversation. Coco Chanel observed how a woman enters a room and captures everyone’s attention. Typically, that woman knows she is special and cherishes her uniqueness.

A woman shouldn’t be reduced to a collection of body parts or a mannequin, which often happens when she lacks proportion and taste.

But what if you don’t have a traditionally beautiful figure? Stop. Remember: an unattractive figure is simply a frightened one, from head to toe. What do we have to fear? We are women! Play more sports to slim the waist. Add more sparkle to your eyes. Flash smiles that are irresistible. And let’s not forget the old saying: “To learn to play the harp, one must play the harp.” To become a true woman, embody that spirit.
