Journalists from the British publication Daily Mail They asked the image generator Midjourney to predict what ten major cities in the U.S. will look like in 2050. Then they sought comments from experts in smart city development.
Seattle
It is worth noting that the artificial intelligence tool Midjourney creates images based on verbal descriptions. Currently, the prompts have focused on the changes in megacities influenced by overpopulation, global warming, and technological development. The neural network has turned its attention to New York, Washington, Houston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Diego. According to the AI’s predictions, these will soon become utopian cities, as if from movies about a distant future.
New York
Megacities equipped with robotics will be immersed in lush greenery. Vertical farms for growing organic products will appear everywhere. Numerous driverless cars, which will not pollute the atmosphere with harmful emissions, will be seen on the roads and in the air. Cities will fully transition to solar and other renewable energy sources, reports the Daily Mail.
San Diego
American megacities of the future will primarily use technology to improve the quality of life for their residents. This is the belief of Chris Diamond, director of the International Smart City Management Program at the Zigurat Global Institute of Technology in Barcelona.
Los Angeles
According to the expert, people are likely to travel less on the streets. This is largely due to remote work becoming the norm. When city dwellers do leave their homes, they will have access to various types of autonomous or human-operated transportation. Mr. Diamond believes that homes will be energy-efficient and powered by clean energy. They will also feature farms where vegetables and fruits will be grown. Thus, the expert hopes that communities will be “radically more efficient,” environmentally friendly, and healthier.
San Francisco
AI will play a significant role in city management, suggested Wendy Shirer, director of smart cities at Pulsant. It is even possible that mayors of megacities will have deputies powered by artificial intelligence.
Houston
According to the UN forecast, by 2050 nearly three-quarters of the world’s population (68 percent) will live in cities.
