According to scientists who like to look into the near future, the traditional Christmas dinner will soon have a somewhat different appearance than it does now. The team from the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has envisioned a Christmas dinner of the unforgettable future. Its menu includes, among other things, pigs in blankets made with seaweed meat, turkey with alternative proteins, dishes made from pea cheese, and super potatoes.
Piglets in blankets
This dish is a traditional favorite for the British. Christmas table Soon, the meat for her will likely come from animals that were fed with algae.
Meat from animals that are fed aquatic plants enriched with iodine and selenium is significantly more nutritious and beneficial in terms of its biochemical composition. At least, that is what researchers claim.
Turkey
The recipe for the main dish of the holiday – turkey with various side dishes – could also benefit from a rethinking. Scientists believe that the main ingredient – turkey – could soon be grown in laboratory conditions.
Such technological innovation will contribute to a decrease in demand for this poultry, especially during the pre-holiday days. It will also provide Christmas dinner with environmentally friendly, affordable, nutritious, and tasty alternative proteins. These are currently being actively developed by a team of scientists from the National Centre for Innovation in Alternative Proteins in Leeds, the Cell Agri Production Centre in Bath, and the UKRI Centre for Microbiology and Engineering at Imperial College.
Potato dishes
Researchers also plan to create a so-called super potato based on the latest advancements in engineering biology. Scientists are already developing improved potato varieties that are healthier and more resistant to damage. Additionally, this vegetable cooks significantly faster.
Pea cheese
Researchers from the University of Nottingham have developed cheese from peas using advanced technologies. And ultimately transformed yellow British peas into an environmentally friendly plant-based cheese.
This alternative option has properties similar to dairy cheese but is free from a large amount of fat. As a result, it produces a healthy and tasty vegan cheese that can be used for preparing Christmas dishes.
Stella Pease, a top manager at UKRI, noted: “Food is at the heart of many cultures; it brings people together to share traditions.” And, of course, it gives us strength and supports our health.
