Winter is the season for colds: experts have confirmed the effectiveness of simple home remedies.

During winter, the number of respiratory illnesses skyrockets. Millions of people grapple with runny noses, coughs, fevers, and chills. Often, simple and effective home remedies, tried and tested over time, come to the rescue. They quickly alleviate the most severe symptoms without requiring significant expenses.

A cold is an infectious disease, often of viral origin, that affects the upper respiratory tract. It is frequently equated with the term “acute respiratory viral infection” (ARVI). Less commonly, colds can also be caused by other microorganisms, including bacteria.

Hot Drinks

Dr. Leila Hannbek, a well-known British pharmacist, noted that when dealing with a cold, it’s crucial to maintain hydration and consume plenty of fluids. A hot sweet drink, such as tea with honey, lemon, and ginger, is a simple way to soothe a sore throat.

“Honey has anti-inflammatory properties, lemon contains vitamin C, which supports the immune system and is particularly effective against respiratory viruses like the flu virus, and ginger has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help with muscle aches,” the expert explained.

A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine confirmed the effectiveness of vitamin C in combating colds. The authors demonstrated a “reduction in the severity and duration of cold illnesses with vitamin C intake.”

Chicken Broth

A serving of chicken broth (or soup) can also ease the symptoms of illness. It serves as a source of healthy, easily digestible calories and nutrients. Plus, it helps prevent dehydration.

“Chicken soup contains nutritious ingredients like protein, garlic, and vegetables that strengthen the immune system and help relieve nasal congestion,” Dr. Hannbek assured.

A study conducted in the late 20th century by the American College of Chest Physicians examined the benefits of broth, particularly its effects on immune cells. It found that chicken broth contains several compounds with healing properties, including anti-inflammatory ones.

Chicken soup becomes even more beneficial when prepared with garlic and onions, as they are sources of zinc—a vital mineral necessary for the development of immune-forming cells.

Gogol-Mogol and Inhalation

Gogol-Mogol is an Eastern European thick drink that, like lemon and ginger, soothes the throat and reduces irritation. It typically consists of raw egg yolks, sugar, milk, and optionally, butter.

Different cooks create various variations of this recipe. Some, for instance, add honey.

As a good complement to this folk remedy, Dr. Hannbek recommends steam inhalations, which help thin mucus in the sinuses, relieve sore throats, and reduce hoarseness.

You can use a traditional method: breathe under a towel over freshly boiled potatoes. Boiling water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil also works well for this procedure, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Warm Drink with Black Currant and Hot Bath

Professor Ron Eccles from Cardiff University, former director of the Cold Centre, is confident that a hot drink, particularly one with black currant, can help combat the symptoms of colds and flu.

A 2008 study showed that consuming a hot drink made with black currant provides rapid relief from runny noses, coughs, sneezing, sore throats, chills, and fatigue.

According to Professor Eccles, one should not overlook the healing properties of a hot bath or even a shower. They help combat nasal congestion, coughs, and sore throats.

In addition to home remedies, Dr. Hannbek recommended taking inexpensive over-the-counter pain relievers to quickly overcome muscle aches and fever. However, it’s always important to consult a pharmacist or family doctor regarding any medications.
